Adult Strings Classes

It’s Never Too Late to Make Music

Whether you’ve always wanted to learn a string instrument or you’re ready to pick up an
instrument you played years ago, the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Symphony School invites
you to make music with us.

Our Adult String Classes are designed for musicians at a variety of experience levels, from
complete beginners to advanced players. Classes are taught by professional instructors in a
relaxed, friendly, and encouraging environment with an emphasis on high-quality musical
instruction.

Choose from violin, viola, cello, or double bass and find the ensemble that’s right for you.

Fall 2026 Session Begins: August 10–11, 2026

Location: Former AB Stephens Building, 2828 Drake Avenue SW, Huntsville
Fall Concert: Tuesday, December 8, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. — Location TBA

Participants must provide their own instrument and music stand.

Choose Your Class

Beginner Strings Class for Adults

Mondays | 5:00–6:00 p.m.
Instructor: Drew Sareete
Tuition: $175
Begins: Monday, August 10

Never played before? Start here

This class is designed for adults who want to learn violin, viola, cello, or double bass. No previous musical experience is necessary. Students will learn fundamental playing techniques, note reading, musicianship, and the basics of performing as part of an ensemble, including following a conductor, playing with a section, and listening across the orchestra.

Best for: First-time players and adults with little or no previous experience

Intermediate Strings Class for Adults

Mondays | 5:30–6:30 p.m.
Instructor: Bethany Wing
Tuition: $175
Begins: Monday, August 10

Ready for the next step — or ready to start playing again?

The Intermediate String Class is designed for adults with at least one year of experience on violin, viola, cello, or double bass, as well as students who have completed the Beginner String Class. Students continue developing technique, note-reading skills, and ensemble playing through more challenging music. This is also an excellent refresher for adults returning to an instrument they played earlier in life.

Best for: Players with approximately one year of experience or returning musicians who need a refresher.

Advanced Strings Class for Adults

Mondays | 6:45–8:00 p.m.
Instructor: Bethany Wing
Tuition: $185
Begins: Monday, August 10

Take your playing to the next level.

This course is designed for adults with at least two years of playing and music-reading experience or those who have completed the HSO Intermediate String Class. Students will continue developing advanced technique while learning and performing more challenging repertoire.

Best for: Experienced players comfortable reading music and performing in an ensemble.

Horizon Chamber Orchestra

Tuesdays | 6:30–8:00 p.m.
Instructor: Bethany Wing
Tuition: $200
Begins: Tuesday, August 11

Horizon is HSO’s most advanced adult string ensemble and is designed for musicians with at least three years of playing and music-reading experience.

Players should be comfortable:
● Reading medium-to-advanced rhythms
● Following bowing directions
● Working in third position
● Using a comfortable working vibrato
● Performing more advanced orchestral literature

Best for: Experienced adult string musicians ready for HSO’s highest-level adult ensemble.
