What is Kurt Weill doing in Alabama? The German-born tunesmith penned several theatre songs which became smash pop hits and jazz standards: “Mack the Knife” (Bobby Darin, Louis Armstrong) and “Alabama Song” (The Doors), for example. But he was also a “serious” composer, the author of symphonies and sonatas alike. In today’s Casual Classics program, conductor Gregory Vajda will lead an exploration of this fascinating figure’s dualistic life and work through arrangements of some of his most popular numbers.
